[06] Who Keeps Score

A small independent desk that treats counting history as data: figures first, verdicts second, reasoning in a few lines.

What this site is

Guidetaltallynestl is an independent reference on tally marks and hand counting — from Palaeolithic notched bones to the public count boards used in modern elections. It is published by Guidetaltallynestl Media Ltd and is not affiliated with any museum, survey organisation, electoral authority, sports body or manufacturer mentioned on these pages.

How figures get on the board

  1. Primary first. Survey protocols come from the organisations that run them; artefact details from holding institutions and peer-reviewed literature.
  2. Ranges over false precision. Archaeological dates are given as approximations ("c. 43,000 years") and ranges where estimates differ.
  3. Disputes flagged. Where an interpretation is contested — the Ishango prime-number reading, for example — the page says so.
  4. Ratings labelled. Editorial scores, such as the system scoreboard in Ledger 02, are marked as judgement, not measurement.

Voice

Each page opens with the count and a short verdict, then gives the reasoning. The aim is that a reader gets the shape of a subject in thirty seconds and the detail in five minutes.

Corrections

Errors are fixed as soon as they are verified, and material changes are noted on the page. To report one, use the message builder or email [email protected] with the page, the claim and a source.

No advertising, no sponsorship

The site carries no paid placements. Products such as hand counters are mentioned only to explain how counting works, never as recommendations to buy.
